The Deadfall Lakes and Mt Eddy
By Jim Broshears
In a sea of smoke from last month’s wildfires, my wife Cyd and I ventured forth to find an island of clarity. Luck was with us as we took the short trek to the Deadfall Lakes nestled in the bowl of the “Eddys” west of Mt Shasta.
This was an opportunity for Cyd to try out her new Osprey Ariel 55 backpack and our move toward lighter loads. Our goal was to get Cyd’s load down to about 20 lbs including water and food. She has a 3 lb Sierra Designs sleeping bag and 9 oz Klymit ground pad. added to a 4lb 14 oz backpack for a core gear weight of about 8 lbs. We kept our meals simple and easy using my Jetboil stove and some Mountain House dinners. Adding in clothing, water, some food, and essentials, the total was about 22 lbs.

The Deadfall Lakes are on the Pacific Crest Trail north of Castle Crags and southeast of the Marble Mtns. This is a great backpack trip for beginners and families.
